A court has declared that it has no jurisdiction to hear a case against police officers who beat a woman in a police station in İzmir last year, daily Milliyet reported.

The first hearing today was ended by the criminal court of peace, which referred the case to the criminal court of first instance.

The lawyers for Fevziye Cengiz, the woman who was beaten by the officers, also agreed with the lack of jurisdiction, and claimed that the case should be picked up by a court of serious crimes.

Footage of police officers beating Cengiz surfaced late last year, leading to a public outcry.

Cengiz is accused of “insulting and injuring a civil servant.” A seperate lawsuit against the three officers on the charge of "using excessive force" was filed Nov. 28.
