Kids enjoying art workshops at Istanbul Modern

The Summer Art Workshops offer children a different activity every day with practices that include disciplines such as painting, sculpting, photography, animation, installations and performance art. The workshops are held in Turkish.

Held every week day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the summer art workshops’ Monday seminars are “My Play Tent” and “My Chateau” on a rotating basis. Similarly, the Tuesday seminars are “Were the Dinosaurs Alive,” and “Küçükü’s Forest.” On Wednesday the museum hosts “Never Place,” and “Under the Sea;” on Thursdays “Cecü’s Midgets,” and “Shoe Factory;” and on Fridays it hosts “Painting Hunters” and “Shadow Paintings” on the same rotating basis.
In conjunction with Burhan Doğançay’s exhibition “Fifty Years of Urban Walls,” Istanbul Modern has designed a special program entitled “Colors of the City” for children, youngsters and families. The educational program “Colors of the City” begins with an expert-guided exhibition tour after which children and youth build art walls and do graffiti while families create collages.
The program includes classes titled “Masons” for the 4-to-6 and 7-to-9 age groups; a stencil design workshop for 7-to-9, 10-to-12 and 13-to-15 age groups and finally a graffiti workshop for 16-and-over age group. In the “Art in Family” program, families with children ages 3 to 5 can participate in a “Caterpillar Collage,” while families with children aged 6 to 10 can take part in the activity called “Doors.”
In “Masons,” participants combine blocks of different colors and shapes and place diverse signs on these to form compositions based on Doğançay’s “Grego Walls” and “Detour” series. In the stencil design workshop, participants design images, make stencils to copy these images and transfer them onto wall surfaces.
In the graffiti workshop, youth over 16 years of age do graffiti with artist Çağrı Küçüksayraç based on the “Breakthrough,” “Double Realism,” “Detour” and “Doors” series which mark out Doğançay’s artistic periods.
In the “Art in Family” and “Caterpillar Collage” activities, families with children aged 3 to 5 make circular shapes in which they create a picture of a caterpillar using collage techniques. In “Doors,” based on Doğançay’s works, families with children aged 6 to 10 make pictures on door-shaped cardboard surfaces.
“Colors of the City” is carried out every day of the week except Mondays for school groups, and on weekends for children, youth and families.
Through educational programs carried out in conjunction with the collection exhibition “New Works, New Horizons,” the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art helps children reinforce what they learn in school and develop their creativity by learning about new possibilities of expression in art.
Meanwhile, the “My Museum Bag” activities aimed at children of different age groups and entitled “The Art of Collage,” “Getting to Know Fahrelnissa Zeid,” “The Mysteries of Abstract Art,” “Portraits That Tell Us about Ourselves,” “Red” and “Figurative Paintings.”
Children can participate in My Museum Bag events every day of the week except Mondays for primary-school groups, and on weekends for children in the 4-to-6, 7-to-9, and 10-to-12 age groups. k HDN
