Kenyan-born Turk Can wins first gold at Euros

The first gold medal of the European Athletics Championships went the way of a Kenyan-born Turk, Yasemin Can, on June 6.The 19-year-old, previously known as Vivian Jemutai, dominated the women’s 10,000m, maintaining a breakaway after 3km to win in a personal best of 31min 12.86sec.
Portugal’s Dulce Felix took silver in 31:19.03, with Norwegian Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal claiming bronze (31:23.45).
Britain’s defending champion Jo Pavey, 42, was fifth.
