Turkey’s western province of İzmir has been preparing to increase its service of free internet in open areas from one to eight locations. The İzmir Metropolitan Municipality has already begun to provide free internet in the Pasaport neighborhood, with a plan to increase the service to seven more locations frequented by locals. The services are expected to begin in June, as the municipality is still working on the infrastructure for the services.
The İzmir Development Agency (İZKA) under the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality completed the tender for a free internet service titled “WizmirNET” available in Gündoğdu Square, Kültürpark, Konak Square, the Aşık Veysel Recreation Area, the Historical Water gas factory, the Buca Hasanağa Sports Complex and the Ahmed Adnan Saygun Art Center, in addition to Pasaport.
The free internet service will begin in Konak and Gündoğdu, while the other five locations will follow before the end of June. The system will require users to register via a password sent through their mobile phones in order to get online access. The password will be valid for 24 hours once taken from the system, with the ability to use the same password in all eight locations during that time period.
