Culture Inc. has added a new volume to its “100 Faces of Istanbul” series, with a volume on the 100 industrial companies that had an impact on Istanbul’s economic and commercial development during the last periods of the Ottoman Empire and the first years of the Republic. The book, “Istanbul’un 100 Sanayi Kuruluşu” (Istanbul’s 100 Industrial Institutions), focuses on the stories behind the establishment of some of the big names we know today, as well as the conditions of the period during which they were founded. In some cases they are names that one might have seen in an old magazine or advertisement.
The book takes up a period and a field about which there is little known today, and sheds light on the city’s economic potential and its past. It proves that industrial production in that period was neither dry, nor lacking, contrary to what is commonly known. Each featured company is also accompanied by a photograph from the period when it was up and running.
“Istanbul’un 100 Sanayi Kuruluşu” is available from the Istanbul Municipal Bookstore and other large bookstores.
