The legislation committee scrapped the bill proposed by Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman's party by a vote of eight to three, an official told Agence France-Presse.

Although MPs could pursue the measure and reintroduce the bill on their own, the move effectively strips the proposal of government approval and significantly lowers the chances it would pass into law. The pledge of allegiance was a key element in Yisrael Beitenu's campaigning for the February general election, in which it came in third, winning 15 of the 120 seats in parliament.
