Tariq al-Hashemi, the fugitive Iraqi vice-president, arrived in Turkey late Monday on his third visit abroad since the beginning of the internal political crisis in Iraq. Hashemi’s visit to Turkey could stoke fresh tension between Ankara and Baghdad.Hashemi’s visit will be a brief one, CNNTürk reported without giving details as to who the Iraqi politician would meet with during his stay. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu are in China for official talks, and are not expected to meet the Iraqi politician.
Hashemi, Iraq’s highest-ranking Sunni politican, fled to northern Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government when a warrant arrest for his arrest was issued by Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Hashemi has left northern Iraq and traveled to Qatar and Saudi Arabia, causing diplomatic tension between Iraq and the countries that have hosted him.
