The prosecutor’s office in the eastern province of Van has started an investigation into the Justice and Development Party (AKP) Deputy Chairman Hüseyin Çelik’s claim that a bomb was placed in his room at Van University in 1995, on the orders of former Van Governor Mahmut Yılbaş.Çelik had accused Yılbaş on July 2 of ordering a bomb to be placed in his room when Çelik was an academic at Van’s Yüzüncü Yıl University in 1995.
Ex-governer rejects Çelik’s claims
“In 1995, a bomb was placed in my room at the university. Fortunately, nothing happened. I tried for days to learn what was happening. At last, the authorities said, ‘Don’t mess with this, you may get into trouble.’ What does this mean? How can you explain such a situation? I am confessing this for the first time here: The chief of police at the time said, ‘I don’t know how to say it, but the bomb order was given by the governor.’ Turkey has experienced such events. You see that it is not certain where terrorism can appear,” Çelik said.
However, Yılbaş said Çelik’s claim was a conspiracy against him, and that he did not even know Çelik at that time.
