Indictment prepared over metro collapse

Two officials with a company building Ankara’s new metro, as well as two with the capital’s water authority, could face charges after prosecutors prepared an indictment against them yesterday following a collapse at their construction site that killed one man.

The Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office is demanding between two and 15 years in prison for the two company officials and two officials from the Ankara Municipality Water Works (ASKİ) in connection with the incident, in which Kadir Sevim plunged to his death on the morning of June 22 while walking to work in front of the Air Force Command on İnönü Boulevard.

The Ankara 4th Criminal Court of First Instance will now decide whether to accept the indictment that has called for the officials to be charged with causing death through negligence.

Sevim’s body was eventually located a kilometer away in the sewage system. The victim had reportedly been working on the construction of a building in the Parliament for two days when the tragedy happened.

The collapse is believed to have resulted from work on the metro that had started nearly 10 years ago but has never been finished.
