Heavy snow expected to hit Istanbul this weekend

A wave of cold air coming from the Balkans is estimated to hit Istanbul Jan. 5, the General Directorate of Meteorology has announced.Temperatures are expected to fall below zero starting Jan. 5, ahead of heavy snowfall that will continue in the city until Jan. 9.
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, which received many criticisms during the previous snowstorm for not taking sufficient measures, announced that 2,266 personnel have taken various measures on 255 different routes, adding that 908 snow plough vehicles, 254,007 tons of salt and 1,800 tons of de-icing solution were ready.
On Dec. 21, adverse weather conditions disrupted life in Istanbul, causing road transport complications, many accidents and bottlenecks on highways on both sides of the city.
