Germany condemns airstrikes in northwest Syria

Germany strongly condemned the Syrian regime and its allies on July 12 for their recent airstrikes in the country's northwest that have killed and injured dozens of civilians.

A Foreign Ministry statement said at least three medical facilities funded by Germany were targeted in multiple airstrikes, killing several medical assistants.

“We condemn in the strongest terms these targeted attacks on medical facilities and humanitarian workers,” the statement said.

It called on the Syrian regime and its allies to stop their military offensive, respect the international humanitarian law and ensure the protection of the civilian population.

Last September, Turkey and Russia had agreed to turn Idlib into a de-escalation zone, in which acts of aggression are expressly prohibited.

The Syrian regime, however, has consistently broken terms of the ceasefire, launching frequent attacks inside the de-escalation zone.

Strikes in the past 11 weeks have left 606 civilians, including 157 children, dead, according to a report published by the U.K-based Syrian Network for Human Rights.
