Filmekimi kicks off in Istanbul
ISTANBUL
The Filmekimi film week kicks off Oct. 5 in Istanbul and will continue through Oct. 14 with a program consisting of films that have been screened and awarded at leading world festivals, as well as highly anticipated new productions. Following the Istanbul screenings, the event will continue in Ankara and İzmir as well.
On the opening day of the festival, “A Star is Born,” one of the most recounted love stories in cinema, will return in a remake directed by Bradley Cooper. The film stars Lady Gaga and will be screened once only as the opening film of Filmekimi.
Alfonso Cuarón’s Venice Golden Lion-winning “Roma” will be the festival’s closing film. The most personal project to date from the Academy Award-winning director and writer Cuarón, “Roma” follows Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), a young domestic worker from a family in the middle-class neighborhood of Roma in Mexico City.
Delivering an artful love letter to the women who raised him, Cuarón draws on his own childhood to create a vivid and emotional portrait of domestic strife and social hierarchy amid political turmoil of the 1970s.
“Roma” is Cuarón’s first project since the ground-breaking “Gravity” in 2013. It will be screened at Cinemaximum Zorlu on Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.
Films will be screened at four movie theaters in Istanbul: Atlas and Beyoğlu cinemas in Beyoğlu, Cinemaximum City’s in Nişantaşı and the Rexx cinema in Kadıköy.
Cinephiles will have a chance to watch Filmekimi films in Ankara at the Cinemaximum Cepa and in İzmir at the Cinemaximum Konak Pier.
