Former Sunderland and Russia coach Dick Advocaat is in talks to become manager of Istanbul club Fenerbahçe after resigning as Netherlands assistant coach.

The 68-year-old Dutchman is set to succeed Vítor Pereira, who was officially sacked on Aug. 15 after one season in charge.

Advocaat was in Istanbul on Aug. 16 to finalize the contact talks with Fenerbahçe after agreeing in principal to take over the head coach’s post, according to reports in Turkish media.

Fenerbahçe sacked Portuguese coach Pereira in the middle of his two-year contract, the club announced on Aug. 15.

“As of today, our contract with Vitor Pereira was unilaterally canceled based on a foreseen necessity by our executive board,” a written statement by the club read.

The Istanbul club hired Pereira as a coach on June 11, 2015, for a two-year deal.

During Pereira’s time at the helm, Fenerbahçe posted 38 wins, 15 draws and nine losses.
