Fenerbahçe rallies to score dramatic cup win
ANKARA - Hürriyet Daily News
Fenerbahçe rallied from a two goal deficit, to beat Kayserispor in a penalty shoot out to advance to the semifinal of the Ziraat Turkish Cup.The Istanbul team, which is on a 29-year drought in the domestic cup competition, is now two games away from ending one of the most notorious streaks in Turkish history.
But the win on April 11 did not come the easy way.
Kayserispor took the lead in the 43rd minute, thanks to Moroccan player Nordin Amrabat and Swedish attacker Emir Kujovic doubled Kayserispor’s lead early in the second half. James Troisi stole the ball from Fenerbahçe’s Reto Ziegler and passed the ball to Kujovic, who put the ball into the net.
However, Fenerbahçe clawed one back only a minute after conceding the second, when Cristian Baroni’s shot outside the box hit the net, thanks to a goalkeeping error from Gökhan Değirmenci.
Kayserispor looked like it was still heading for the win, before Moussa Sow equalized the score at 2-2 during stoppage time.
The deadlock was not broken during extra time and the game went into penalties. Fener was perfect in the penalties, while Kayseri’s Kujovic missed his penalty, causing the 2008 winner to be knocked out.
Eskişehirspor has already qualified for the semifinals, while the remaining quarterfinals were still on progress as the Daily News went to print.
