Fenerbahçe crowned champions in women’s basketball after victory against Galatasaray

Hours before Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray fought for the Turkish Super League trophy in separate matches, the Istanbul arch-rivals staged a head-to-head showdown in the women’s Basketball League, with Fenerbahçe sealing the title for an eighth time in a row.The Yellow Canaries, led by U.S. star Cappie Pondexter’s 27 points, won 72-62 today in the decisive game 5 at their home Ülker Sports Arena to clinch the series 3-2.
Ivana Matovic assisted Pondexter with 20 points and Esmeral Tunçluer added 11 points for the hosts. Ann Wauters led Galatasaray with 25 points, while Lindsey Harding poured in 16 points.
With the trophy, Fenerbahçe not only drew level with Galatasaray in terms of the number of women’s basketball titles – at 11 apiece – but also drew within one title of the Lions’ record of nine straight championships.
