Academics and friends of Şeyma Özcan, a second-year student at Istanbul’s Boğaziçi University who was arrested for allegedly being a member of the outlawed “Devrimci Karargah” (Revolutionary Headquarters), gathered Dec. 16 to protest her case.Özcan, a history student at Istanbul Boğaziçi University, was detained on Dec 6 on claims of being a member of the Revolutionary Headquarters organization. Her family and friends gathered together in front of Beşiktaş Court on Dec. 16 to protest her case, which apparently rests on her past inquiry about an internship.
“Şeyma was arrested because another person who was arrested on the same claims had called her for an internship at a newspaper. Şeyma could stay in jail until an indictment and this may last for months,” Şeyma’s mother, Sultan Özcan, told the Hürriyet Daily News.
Meanwhile Şeyma’s friends were also present at the protest in front of the court. “The arrests of students are systematic and arbitrary. We are free only by chance in these circumstances where our books and internship appeals are counted as evidence for being guilty,” Özcan’s friend Yıldız Tar told the Daily News.
