Famed director dies of cancer at age 65

Yusuf Kurçenli had been treated for cancer and died yesterday at age 65.
Well-known Turkish director Yusuf Kurçenli died yesterday of cancer at the age of 65 in Istanbul. He had receiving treatment for the disease for a few years.Between 1973 and 1980, he worked as a producer and director at Turkish National Radio and Television (TRT). He made his first film, “Ve Recep Ve Zehra Ve Ayşe” (And Recep, and Zehra, and Ayşe), in 1983.
Kurçenli subsequently made numerous films and received many awards in various film festivals. In 2011, he received the “Cinema Honorable Award” at the 30th Istanbul Film Festival.
He also picked up a number of other awards, including the Best Film Award for “Karartma Geceleri” (Blackout Nights) at the ninth International Istanbul Film Festival; the Best Director Award for “Çözülmeler”(Disengagements) at the 13th Istanbul Film Festival; the Best Film Award for “Çözülmeler” at the 16th SİYAD Turkish Cinema Awards; the Best Original Scenario Award for “Çözülmeler” at the seventh Ankara Film Festival; and the Best Director Award for “Çözülmeler,” also at the seventh Ankara Film Festival.
