Ex-German justice minister seeks support from Turkey for Council of Europe bid
ANKARA
A delegation composed of Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, a former German justice minister who is running for the office of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, is visiting Turkey to seek its support.Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger; the deputy head of mission of the German Embassy in Ankara, Thomas Kurz; and Jens Gust of the German Foreign Ministry’s Department for the Council of Europe met with Youth and Sports Minister Çağatay Kılıç, the head of the Turkish-German Friendship Group at Parliament, on Feb. 10.
The delegation also held discussions at the Turkish Foreign Ministry.
The current secretary-general, Norwegian Thorbjørn Jagland, who has been in office since 2009, has announced that he will run for a second term. The election of the new secretary-general will take place in June 2014.
