EU presses Georgian gov’t
BRUSSELS - Agence France-Presse
The European Union pressed Georgia yesterday to do even more to bolster its democratic credentials after recent polls. Democracy is not just Election Day, “it is also the day after, and the upholding of democratic principles and rule of law on a daily basis,” European Commission head Jose Manuel Barroso told visiting Georgia Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili. The president has vowed to maintain Saakashvili’s pro-Western foreign policy and continue Georgia’s bid to join NATO and ultimately the European Union.
