A solid waste storage and disposal facility in the western province of Edirne that produces electricity from waste has started operating.

“The facility will generate 14 million kWh of electricity and this figure will increase to 28 million kWh next year,” Recep Gürkan, the mayor, said.

The facility was inaugurated with a ceremony attended by Edirne Governor Ekrem Canalp, lawmakers from the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) and İYİ (Good) Party, and the chair of the private company Atlas Sanayi.

“We ended and found a solution to the insanitary disposal problem within 18 months and we have established this facility. I would like to thank Atlas Sanayi for investing 64 million Turkish Liras [$12.4 million] in Edirne for this plant on behalf of the people of Edirne, and Lalapaşa, Süloğlu and Havsa districts,” Gürkan said.

Households’ average electricity consumption is 100 kWh per month, making the facility meet the power demand of 16,000 households each month, according to the mayor. He also said the plant will produce $1.9 million worth of electricity each year.

“This facility will not only eliminate solid waste but also the hazardous methane gas by transforming this gas into electricity,” Canalp said, adding that there are other projects in the pipeline aimed at reducing pollution in Ergene River.
