Domestic trips increase 9.1 pct

ISTANBUL
Domestic trips in Turkey increased by 9.1 percent in the second quarter of 2012 compared to the same period of the previous year, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) said Nov. 30 in its quarterly report.

Some 14.6 million trips – in which travelers stayed one or more nights in the same quarter - were performed by Turks during the period.

“Visiting relatives” was the main purpose of trips taken at 63.7 percent, the second purpose was “travel-leisure (holiday)” at 19.2 percent, while the third was “health” at 8 percent.

The average overnight stay was 7.4 nights and the average expenditure for the trips was 253 Turkish Liras.
Domestic visitor expenditures increased by 21.8 percent in the second quarter year-on-year, amounting to a total of 317 billion liras.
