According to other experts, however, high-protein diets are not free from risk. Excessive protein consumption can cause loss of electrolytes and major fluctuations in the body’s water balance, diet and nutrition specialist Dr. Betül Sanrı from Istanbul University’s Çapa School of Medicine Hospital said. “Our body gets around 60 percent of its total energy needs from carbohydrates; therefore we cannot give them up altogether. What matters is meeting our carbohydrate needs from healthy sources.” Dr. Ahmet Ak from Bağcılar Research Hospital said high protein consumption could also cause irreversible kidney damage, increased uric acid production, and hypertension.
