Couples seeking to marry on a “special date” are rushing to municipal units in the western province of İzmir to book for Dec. 12.According to information provided by officials, applications at the district municipalities’ registry offices have increased by up to 300 percent.
Ege University Sociology Department Chair Ercan Tatlıdil said the reason why couples were seeking to have their wedding on such special dates like “12/12/2012” was as a reflection of the human effort to make life more meaningful.
Some 30 couples have applied to marry at İzmir’s Barabağlar Municipality, while Karşıyaka Municipality has received 27 applications for the special date.
Municipality officials said they had had to turn down some applications due to a lack of lots, as the wedding unit can facilitate only 10 ceremonies.
Bornova Municipality’s registry official Üzeyir Yıldız said normally in December they received eight to 10 wedding applications at most per day, but these rates had risen by 300 percent for Dec. 12.
