Controlled explosion causes alarm near military base in southeast Turkey A "controlled" explosion has occured at a military base in a southeastern Turkish province, causing alarm.

Ambulances and firefighters were dispached to the area after the explosion at the 20th Armored Brigate Headquarters in Şanlıurfa, a province on Turkey's border with Syria, Doğan News Agency reported on May 7.

Military sources speaking to Hürriyet said an anti-tank mine was destroyed in a "planned and controlled way." Voicing surprise over the brief public panic in the area, sources stressed that local officials had been informed beforehand.
