The gauge of confidence declined to 68.9 from 74.2 the previous month, the Ankara-based Turkish Statistical Institute, or TÜİK, said on its Web site Friday. The index has been below 100, which indicates that consumers are pessimistic about the future, since May 2006.

The sub-index on purchasing power dropped to 65.50 from 72, while the sub-index on general economic situation fell to 57.30 from 64.33. The consumer confidence index is based on interviews with around 8,000 people each month.
