CHP deputy resigns after controversial session at Turkish Parliament

Salih Fırat, the Adıyaman deputy for the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), resigned today, reportedly over a deputy party member’s controversial expressions about Kurds.The CHP’s Birgül Ayman Güler reportedly said, “The Turkish nation cannot be equal with the Kurdish nation” at yesterday’s Parliamentary session on advocacy in native languages, a topic that has launched a massive debate at Parliament.
However, Fırat’s secretary Ayfer Erdoğan said in a written statement that a more detailed statement on the deputy’s resignation would follow. The resignation was submitted to the CHP’s Parliamentary group, she said.
