CHP blasts nomination of AKP’s Kahraman as parliament speaker
ANKARA
Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Deputy Group Chair Engin Özkoç has criticized the ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) nomination of İsmail Kahraman for a second term as parliament speaker.
“[Kahraman] is a parliament speaker who does not deserve that position due to the various speeches he has made against Atatürk and the Republic. This nomination is impossible to understand,” Özkoç said.
The AKP nominated Kahraman for a second term in his position following a series of in-house consultations on Nov. 13.
Kahraman is an Istanbul deputy from the ranks of the AKP, who has been serving as the 27th parliament speaker since November 2015.
Elections at parliament for the position of parliament speaker will take place on Nov. 20. Once elected, a parliament speaker serves a term of two years.
