Boosting women’s role key: UNESCO
ISTANBUL - Hürriyet Daily News
UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova said empowering women was a basic right and a necessity for sustainable development in a video message at the 15th Eurasia Economic Summit. She said if women are excluded from the workplace, then 50 percent of the world’s population is not a part of the workforce.
Bokova said UNESCO was working to educate women to promote development. Last week UNESCO launched a global initiative with the U.S. State Department and United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Bokova pointed to several such education initiatives in countries like Pakistan, South Sudan and Myanmar.
“I believe that by working together we will be strong and will empower girls and women,” she said.
