A blast at a military ammunition depot in the Central Anatolian province of Kırıkkale after midnight yesterday has killed three workers.Rescue teams were still trying to reach an employee trapped inside the four-story building in the district of Yahşihan, 25 kilometers away from central Kırıkkale, as the Daily News went to print.
Firefighters rushed to the scene to extinguish the fire as large numbers of ambulances were also dispatched to the area following the violent blast that was even heard in central Kırıkkale at around 12:30 a.m.
Rescue teams who entered the shell of building after the blaze was brought under control recovered the bodies of the three dead workers.
Kırıkkale Gov. Hakan Yusuf Güner confirmed three of the four workers who were present inside the facility at the time of the blast lost their lives.
All passage to and from the military facility has been prohibited, with the exception of firefighters and paramedics. According to reports, the depot contains chemical materials. The explosion is thought to have started due to gas compression.
