DİYARBAKIR
The Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) has announced 32 female candidates for provincial and district mayor seats for the upcoming local elections, including the party’s co-chair Gültan Kışanak, who is announced to be running in Diyarbakır.The party also announced some female co-mayors for seats the male candidates will run for.
Although co-mayorship is not defined by law, the party says it wants to actualize it in practice to maintain equality. The BDP’s other chairman Demirtaş, who will not run for Parliament in the next elections due to the BDP’s two-term rule, also claimed to be wanting to run for the mayor of Diyarbakır, but the party administration’s decision to nominate a female candidate prevented Demirtaş from running.
The BDP Women’s Assembly decided for the position in Diyarbakır, which is a symbolic city for Kurds, a female candidate should run for office for the first time.
