Nearly 400 million Turkish Liras has been spent on caring for Syrian refugees in Turkey, Turkish Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek has said, while adding that factoring local expenses into the figure could increase the overall amount, private broadcaster NTV has reported.

The funds were transferred to sources providing for over 100,000 refugees now staying in camps in Turkey, Şimşek said.

Municipalities are also spending additional amounts to cover the costs.

The Turkish state has also spent further on general expenses involved with the refugees.

Refugees now too much to handle: MHP leader

Syrian refugees are now too much of a burden for Turkey to handle, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli said today.

"Incoming refugees are now up to a point that Turkey cannot handle it [anymore]," Bahçeli said.

Bahçeli also said Turkey's foreign policy had turned into a "strategic horror movie."
