Most clashes happened between the suspected members of Hizbullah, a radical Islamist grouping known for aiding the state in the torture and murder of Kurdish activists in the 1990s, and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The former group reportedly supports the ISIL, while the latter supports the YPG, the Kurdish militia in Kobane, and condemn the Turkish government's inaction in protecting Syrian Kurds. Kurdish protesters have also clashed with Turkish riot policemen during a demonstration in the southeastern city of Diyarbakir on Oct. 7. AFP Photo / İlyas Akengin

At least 14 people were killed and many more were injured as the advance of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants on the Kurdish town of Kobane in northern Syria prompted fresh protests across Turkey on Oct. 7. A curfew has been declared in six southeastern Turkish provinces. Police also cracked down on protests in the western cities, resorting to tear gas and water cannon like here in Ankara. Kurdish protesters set fire to a public bank on October 7, 2014 in the southeastern city of Diyarbakir during a demonstration to demand more western intervention against Islamic State militants (IS) in Syria and Iraq. Fresh air strikes by the US-led coalition hit positions held by Islamic State jihadists in the southwest of the key Syrian border town of Ain al-Arab, know as Kobane by the Kurds, according to an AFP journalist just across the border in Turkey. The strikes came a day after the extremists pushed into Kobane, seizing three districts in the city's east after fierce street battles with its Kurdish defenders. AFP Photo / İlyas Akengin
