Ankara Bar Association names first woman president

The Ankara Bar Association has elected its first woman head, naming lawyer Sema Aksoy as the president.Aksoy received 4,301 votes in the Second Extraordinary Congress of the Ankara Bar July 7. Aksoy was nominated by the Democratic Left Lawyers’ Group.
“We are a big family at the Ankara Bar. We will all rise if one of us gets hurt despite our differences. We will all unite. As the Ankara Bar we will continue to do our best for human rights, freedoms, democracy struggle and state of law, whatever it costs. Our country and profession mean honor for us,” Aksoy said after being elected as the bar president.
Contemporary Lawyers’ Group nominee Selçuk Kozağaçlı, who is currently under arrest on charges on beign a member of an illegal organization, received 1,139 votes while Nationalist Lawyers’ Group nominee Alpaslan Sucu received 955 votes and Revolutionist Lawyers’ Group nominee Esmani Kırmızı got 79 votes.
Previous bar head Metin Feyzioğlu has handed over his post to Aksoy.
