Zero waste should be taught at schools: Chamber

The Chamber of Environmental Engineers of Turkey (ÇMO) wants schools to teach “zero waste” principles to make conservation, reuse and recycling inseparable parts of life in the country.

The chamber made the suggestion in a letter of opinions submitted to the Environment and Urbanization Ministry as input for draft regulation on the issue.

“In schools, with the support of the National Education Ministry, zero waste awareness lectures should be offered; they should have a specific place in the curriculum,” the chamber’s report stated.

The report also suggested that paper collectors in big cities such as Istanbul, Ankara and İzmir should be integrated to the zero waste project. 

The zero waste project, commenced in 2017, was first realized by first lady Emine Erdoğan and aims to save billions of Turkish Liras for the economy.
