Yates still leads in Tour of Turkey as Viviani wins two out of three
ISTANBUL (AFP)
Already winner of Thursday’s fifth stage, Viviani finished the 136km ride from Kuşadası to İzmir ahead of compatriot and Canondale team-mate Andrea Guardini and Britain’s Mark Cavendish (Omega).
Former world champion Cavendish had won three of the opening four stages but has now been beaten by Viviani in the last two sprint finishes.
Amother British rider, Adam Yates, retained the overall lead, just one second clear of Estonia’s Rein Taaramae.
The 21-year-old rider for the Australian Orica-GreenEDGE team had won May 2 uphill finish to take the leader’s jersey off Taaramae.
On May 4, the Tour of Turkey will end with a stage including the traditional passage over the Bosphorus Bridge from Asian part of Istanbul to the European side in a 121km ride around Istanbul.
The stage gives the race the “intercontinental cycling tour of the world” title that the organizers like to emphasize.
