Works end in Stratonikeia

The latest excavation season has ended in the ancient city of Stratonikeia in the western province of Muğla’s Yatağan district. Professor Bilal Söğüt, head of the excavations, said they had worked for some six months in 2014 with 50 academics and workers.

“This year we worked in ancient structures such as the Roman Bath, the Temple of Emperors and a theater, as well as Ottoman-era structures including the Seljuk Bath, Hasan Şar Village House, Village Square and others. Restorations were carried out in ancient structures. Also, the roof of the Ottoman-era paint workshop was done,” he said.

Stating they had reached significant artifacts during excavations, he added, “We uncovered 172 movable cultural assets. All of them were restored and taken under protection. They were delivered to the Muğla Museum. There are also hundreds of immovable cultural beings in every structure in the ancient city.
These artifacts were restored in the Stone Hospital that we established in the city center. We hope we will receive support from sponsors this year. Private enterprises should support the city, as well as the state. In this way we, will be able to revive the ancient city of Stratonikeia.”
