Woman killed, one wounded in armored vehicle fire in southeastern Turkey

A-59-year-old woman was killed on Feb. 19 when an armored vehicle’s firing mechanism allegedly malfunctioned in the southeastern province of Mardin, the governor’s office said in a written statement.

Dilşah Ak was killed after she was shot by two bullets, one in her head, the other in her hand, fired from an armored police vehicle while she was walking on a street in the Nusaybin district of Mardin. An unidentified person was also injured in the incident.

“One citizen lost her life and one wounded as a fire mechanism was activated due to a malfunction in an armored vehicle that was patrolling as part of security in the Nusaybin district on Feb. 19,” Mardin Governor’s office statement said. 

“The treatment of the wounded citizen is ongoing. We deliver our condolences to the family of the deceased. We also launched a legal and administrative investigation over the incident and the public will be informed about the developments,” the statement added.

The incident took place in the Abdulkadirpaşa neighborhood when Ak was walking on Çağ Çağ Street at 4 p.m.

She was heading to the house of her sister, Afife Yıldırım, who lived on the street. An ambulance was called but Ak died at the scene. Her body was taken to Nusaybin State Hospital for an autopsy.
