Watch out! You might have been sued by one of Ankara’s most active Twitter users, Mayor Melih Gökçek, due to your activity on social media without even knowing it.With the controversial Ankara mayor notorious for having sued around 600 people for answers to his tweets or comments on him, a new satirical website 'informing' you – with good humor – about the odds of you joining the list of offenders is now online.
After the site, “Has Melih Gökçek Sued Me?” (www.melihgokcekbanadavaactimi.com), assesses your activity on Twitter via a questionnaire, an in-built crystal ball will warn you to “check your mail,” inform you that “your name has been heard in the backrooms of power” or perhaps – if you’re lucky – just provide you with the good news that “there are appearantly no trials” – albeit with the proviso that you should “still stay away from the courthouse.” And if the result is unfavourable, you can still console yourself with the good time that you had while discovering it.
In the most recent case of a Twitter user running afoul of Gökçek,17-year-old high school student İrem Aksoy was arrested for tweeting under the hashtag “you are indecent Melih Gökçek.”
She was released after giving testimony but the case sparked debate on what sort of criticism can be directed toward public officials on Twitter.
