Veteran Turkish journalist dies aged 87

Cüneyt Arcayürek, a veteran Turkish journalist, died on June 23 due to multiple organ failure. He was 87.

A lead columnist for daily Cumhuriyet, Arcayürek had been under treatment in a private hospital in Ankara since May 13. He will be laid to rest in the Gölbaşı district of Ankara on June 25, without a funeral ceremony according to his bequest.

Born in 1928, Arcayürek started his journalism career at Ulus (the Nation), the newspaper of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), in 1947. Throughout his career, he worked for a number of newspapers including daily Hürriyet, Tercüman and Milliyet. He wrote dozens of books on Turkish political history. He was also the first journalist to enter Cyprus after the 1974 Peace Operation. 

Arcayürek was also the former advisor of Süleyman Demirel, the ninth president of Turkey, who died on June 17.
