Two village guards killed in PKK attacks in Turkey’s southeast

Two village guards were killed late on Aug. 8 in two separate attacks by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the southeastern provinces of Şırnak and Adıyaman, while a police officer and a solider have also died.Village guard Yahya Akan was heavily wounded when PKK militants detonated a roadside bomb in the Uludere district of Şırnak during the passing of a vehicle.
Akan was rushed to the Uludere State Hospital but later succumbed to his wounds.
In a separate attack in the southeastern province of Adıyaman, PKK militants staged an attack targeting the Çamlıca village with long-barreled weapons, Adıyaman Governor Abdullah Erin said.
Village guard Yusuf Sönmez was wounded in the attack and died of his injuries at Adıyaman Hospital, he added.
Meanwhile, a police officer who was wounded in a PKK attack in the Gürpınar district of the eastern province of Van succumbed to his injuries on Aug. 9.
Police officer Ömer Faruk Bol was heavily wounded on Aug. 8 when PKK militants opened fire with long-barreled weapons on police teams conducting road checks on the Van-Hakkari motorway.
Bol succumbed to his injuries a day later in hospital.
In addition, a wide-scale operation began in the district to apprehend the fleeing militants.
Another soldier was killed and two others were wounded on Aug. 9 when an armored vehicle carrying soldiers overturned in the Baykan district of the southeastern province of Siirt.
The armed vehicle, which was returning from the Dodan Gendarmerie Station, overturned on the shoulder of a road near Dilektepe village.
Three soldiers were initially wounded in the accident but Specialized Sgt. Halil İbrahim Kara succumbed to his injuries at hospital despite all efforts.
The other two wounded soldiers have received outpatient care at hospital.
Meanwhile, the Diyarbakır Governor’s Office announced on Aug. 9 that it had declared a curfew as of 5 a.m. until further notice in 13 villages in the province.
According to a statement, an operation would be conducted against PKK militants in the forested areas of the Lice, Silvan, Kulp and Hazro districts.
The curfew would be effective in the Dolaplodere and Dağcılar villages of the Silvan district, the Çıralı, Kıyıköy, Dallıca, Türeli and Kutlu villages of the Lice district and the Demirli, Kamışlı, Çukurca, Bayırköy, Temren and Taşköprü villages of the Kulp district.
