Two suspects were arrested on June 10 for butchering eight horses in the southern province of Adana, state-run Anadolu Agency has reported.

The suspects, who are also brothers, were detained by police during a raid in Adana’s Yüreğir district on June 7.

The pair said in their testimonies they butchered the horses for their own food and to share with Syrian refugees who live in the area.

On June 7, police seized 25 live horses and the remains of the eight that had been slaughtered from the storage of a two-story building.

The 25 horses that were rescued in the raid were delivered to an animal shelter in Adana.
