Two soldiers killed in PKK attacks in Turkey’s souteast

Two soldiers were killed on Jan. 8 during clashes between Turkish security forces and outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants in the country’s southeast.

In the Sur district of southeastern Diyarbakır province, which has been under a round-the-clock curfew since Dec. 2., PKK militants opened fire with sharpshooters on security forces on Jan. 8 during clashes in the town, The militants also remotely detonated hand-made explosives in the attack, which wounded six soldiers. The wounded soldiers were taken to Diyarbakır Military Hospital, where one specialized sergeant succumbed to his injuries. The clashes in the district are reportedly ongoing.

In a separate PKK attack, Gendarmerie specialized sergeant Ümit İnan was killed during clashes with PKK militants in the Cizre district of southeastern Şırnak province.

Meanwhile, the Turkish General Staff also announced the death of the two soldiers in a statement, sending its condolences to the families of the soldiers and the nation.
