Two killed, six injured in lightning strike in Turkey’s Erzincan

Two people were killed and another six were injured on June 14 when lightning struck people working in a field in the Oğulcuk village of the eastern province of Erzincan, state-run Anadolu Agency has reported.

Eight people, including two children, reportedly took shelter inside a hut after they were caught in the rain.

Two people identified as Ali Işık and his sister Özlem Işık immediately died at the scene when a lightning struck, while the other six were injured.

A number of gendarmerie teams and ambulances were dispatched to the scene after the incident. The injured were transferred to the Erzincan Mengücek Gazi Education and Research Hospital.

Erzincan Gov. Ali Arslantaş confirmed that two people were killed and six people, including two children, were injured in the lightning strike.

He added that an investigation into the incident has begun.

A public prosecutor also arrived at the scene to conduct an inspection.

Meanwhile, Ali Işık and Özlem Işık had reportedly come to the village to help relatives in agricultural work.

Earlier on June 13, one young man was killed and another was injured in a separate lightning strike in the Salihli district of the Aegean province of Manisa, Doğan News Agency has reported.

Muhammet Gökdeniz and Celil Öztürk took shelter in a tent after being caught in the rain while they were feeding animals in the İncirlik region.

However, lightning struck the tent and the young men were taken to hospital, where Gökdeniz later succumbed to his injuries.

He had reportedly been a football player for the youth squad of the local team Salihlispor.
