A discarded cigarette butt sparked the blaze that ripped through the top floor of a center for girls in the town of Adapazari in Sakarya province late Sunday, Dogan News Agency, or DHA, suggested.

The agency quoted firefighting officials as saying that it is unlikely that an electrical short circuit was the cause of the blaze, ruling out earlier reports.

The emergency fire exit on the top floor of the dormitory was locked, DHA reported, citing journalists who entered the building.

Firefighters found the bodies of the two girls, aged 14 and 17, after the flames were extinguished.

Reports say five other people were being treated for smoke inhalation.
