Two suspects have been detained over the shooting a police officer in the southeastern province of Mardin. The injured police officer, identified as Y.U., was taken to hospital after the incident and was reported to be in good condition.

The police officer was injured in the leg on the evening of July 12 when members of the Patriotic Revolutionary Youth Movement (YDG-H) opened fire with a pump-action rifle during a clash in Mardin’s Nusaybin district.

The suspects, identified as R.D. and O.Y., were detained early July 13 in multiple anti-riot police raids after an investigation was launched into the shooting.

The clash started when members of the YDG-H, a youth group affiliated with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) protested the prison conditions of Abdullah Öcalan, the PKK leader serving a life sentence in the İmralı island prison in the Marmara Sea.

Teams from the Nusaybin Police Department Counterterrorism Unit along with anti-riot police forces from the Mardin Police Department on July 13 raided three homes on Serçe Street in the Abdulkadir Paşa neighborhood.

The police detained R.D. and seized his father’s pump-action rifle in the raid of his home, while O.Y. was also detained during the operation.
