Turkish web surfers spent and average of 10.2 hours on social networking websites in October, research by comScore Inc. revealed.

The Turkish number nearly doubled the world average of 5.7 hours per visitor, AFP reported.

Some 1.2 billion users worldwide said they use a social networking site. The number amounts to 82 percent of the world's Internet population over the age of 15.

ComScore's study also revealed Internet users around the world spent one in every five minutes on social networking sites in October, a dramatic increase from 2007 when users said they used justsix percent of their time on social networking sites.

“The emergence and widespread global adoption of social networks has vastly influenced human interaction on an individual, community and larger societal level, and underscores the convergence of the online and offline worlds,” said comScore Chief Marketing Officer Linda Boland Abraham.

“Regardless of geography, social networks are weaving themselves ever more intricately into the fabric of the digital experience, opening a world of new opportunity for business and technology,” she said.

Internet users in Israel were ranked number one in most hours spent on social networking sites while the United States did not even make it on the top ten list.

The top ten countries most engaged in social networking in October 2011, with the average number of hours per visitor are:
