Turkish women book a place in London

Turkey’s national women’s volleyball team secured a place at the 2012 London Olympics with a comfortable 25-22, 25-22, 25-20 victory over Poland yesterday, in the final of the European qualification tournament.Thousands of fans cheered for the Turkish side in the game played on home soil in Ankara, paving the way for a historic victory for Turkish volleyball.
This will be the first time Turkey is present at the Olympics in a team sport since the 1960 Rome Olympics.
Prior to that date, the country was represented six times in football and twice in basketball. No Turkish volleyball team has played in the Olympics before.
Turkey had already secured the participation of 72 athletes in London, which is a record for the country.
