Turkish teacher stabbed to death after defending his friend

Bahadır Grammeşin, who taught in a private school for disabled people, was with a group of friends chatting on a Kadıköy street when he was attacked.

A teacher has died after being stabbed by a group of people in the Kadıköy district of Istanbul, after he had attempted to prevent the harassment of a female friend late May 9. 

Bahadır Grammeşin, who taught in a private school for disabled people, was with a group of friends chatting on a Kadıköy street when he was attacked. A small group of people made a pass at one of Grammeşin’s female friends. He and his friends reacted to the small group for their ill-conduct of a woman and the two groups had an argument over the issue for a short while. 

After a short break, a larger group of 10-15 people with knives and blades came out of a nearby bar and attacked Grammeşin and his friends. Four of them were injured and taken to the Haydarpaşa Hospital. Grammeşin was then transferred to a coroner hospital in the neighborhood, where he died. 

The police detained eight suspects. Around 500 people protested the fatal incident in Kadıköy on May 10. 

Earlier this year, a journalist was stabbed to death in the neighborhood by an angry shopkeeper after a snowball thrown during a playful snowball fight involving the reporter and his friends reportedly hit the tradesman’s window.

Nuh Köklü was returning with his girlfriend and friends from a protest on the evening of Feb. 17 when they started a snowball fight in the district’s Yeldeğirmeni neighborhood. One of the snowballs reportedly missed its target and struck the window of the spice and herb shop belonging to Serkan A., who reacted violently, stabbing and killing Köklü.
