HAKKARİ / ŞIRNAK
A Turkish soldier was killed on May 14 during a clash with PKK militants in southeast Turkey.
The clash erupted when PKK militants were trying to infiltrate a military base in Turkey’s southeastern Hakkari province, a statement said from the provincial governor’s office.
Hakkari has borders with both of the neighboring countries Iran and Iraq.
The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.
Meanwhile, two alleged far-left militants surrendered to Turkish security forces in the southeastern Şırnak province, state-run Anadolu Agency reported on May 14.
The militants were remanded in custody by security at the Habur border gate between Turkey and Iraq, said a security source who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.
