Turkish singer Ruhi Su to be remembered

World-renowned Turkish singer Ruhi Su will be remembered in Melbourne.
The 10-day Melbourne Ruhi Su 100 Celebrations in Australia today will be the most comprehensive event held to commemorate the 100th birthday of world-renowned Turkish singer Ruhi Su.The event has been organized by the Ruhi Su Culture and Arts Association and the Australian Turkish Cultural Association, and will begin with a documentary directed by Hilmi Etikan. Su’s son Ilgın Ruhi Su and one of his students, Karabey Aydoğan, will also attend the events.
The events, which will continue until Sept. 30 will include panel discussions on Su, documentary film screenings, the Karabey Aydoğan Ruhi Su Songs Recital, an exhibition, concerts, dance shows and more. There will also be meetings in Sydney as part of the celebrations. The Ruhi Su 100 events will continue throughout the year in other parts of the world. Born in 1912 in the eastern province of Van, Su performed at the State Opera in Ankara as a celebrated bass baritone, appearing in operas such as Madame Butterfly, Fidelio, Tosca and Rigoletto.
During his contemporary music education, he also studied Turkish folk music and made regular radio programs, playing the saz and singing folk songs, while he worked at the opera. He traveled all over Anatolia and compiled numerous folk songs.
